The TOUR Championship Breakdown

The PGA Tour is wrapping up the FedEx Cup Playoffs this week at the Tour Championship with the winner taking home a cool $18 million dollars. The players that finished inside the Top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings after last week’s BMW Championship will compete this weekend at East Lake in Atlanta.

The TOUR Championship has been held East Lake Golf Club every year since 2004. Rory McIlory took home the title last year for the third time in his career. Tiger Woods currently holds the Tournament record of 23 under par back in 2007.  In 2019, the format of the event changed to where it rewarded the player with the most FedEx Cup points with a head start on the field.  This is called the Gundersen Method where the player with the most FedEx Cup points starts the event at 10 under par, the person second in points starts at 8 under and it goes down from there.

East Lake Golf Club was established back in 1904 and sits about five miles outside Atlanta, Georgia. The was the home course of legendary golfer Bobby Jones.  The course will play as a Par 70 that measures out at 7,346 yards. This course will demand a player to use every club in his bag to win. Before the crazy scoring changes, the average winning score was around 11 under par. We could see lower scores than usual with the extreme heat in Atlanta may have softened the course a bit. Bogey avoidance will be key as the course features 6 water hazards and over 70 bunkers. Keeping the ball on as many fairways and greens as possible will be the way to win.

Tier Picks For The TOUR Championship

Tier 1

Scottie Scheffler

Rory McIlroy

Jon Rahm

Patrick Cantlay

Viktor Hovland

Xander Schauffele

Tommy Fleetwood

Pick: Scottie Scheffler - I know most everyone is going to take Rory McIlory because of his history at East Lake but it is so hard to bet against Scottie with a two stroke advantage on the field. He has finished 31st and 2nd in his two trips to East Lake in this format. He’s the best ball striker in the game, it’s all on whether he can manage the greens respectably.

Tier 2

Max Homa

Brian Harman

Jordan Spieth

Tyrell Hatton

Collin Morikawa

Rickie Fowler

Russell Henley

Pick: Max Homa - I took a risk with Homa last week and he paid us off with a 5th place finish at the BMW Championship. He started in 16th last year at East Lake and behind a second round 62, he finished 5th by the end of the weekend. He starts at 4 under this year.

Tier 3

Wyndham Clark

Keegan Bradley

Tom Kim

Tony Finau

Jason Day

Sungjae Im

Corey Conners

Emiliano Grillo

Pick:  Sungjae Im - Sungjae is about as consistent as they come especially when it comes to the FedEx Cup.  He is 5 for 5 making the Tour Championship.  Sungjae finished 2nd last year at East Lake and will start at 2 under this year.  Over the last 4 years since starting this new format, 5 golfers have finished inside the Top 5 despite starting from so far behind.

Tier 4

Matt Fitzpatrick

Sam Burns

Sepp Straka

Lucas Glover

Si Woo Kim

Adam Schenk

Taylor Moore

Nick Taylor

Pick: Matt Fitzpatrick - I hate to go chalk in this tier but it’s just hard to ignore the talent level. After breaking through last year with his first major championship, this year has to be considered a down year.  He had to finish 2nd last week at the BMW Championship to get into this week’s field. Fitz finished 15th last year at East Lake.
